Common Spin, or Pure Propaganda? – 01

May 14, 2010

Fire is hot, ice is cold, water is wet, and all politicians spin. In this age of 24/7 cable news outlets, the internet and the blogosphere, it’s not nearly as easy to do as it was when there were only the Big 3 Networks. Back then, you could have a spokesman read a prepared statement a couple of times a week, and be done with it. Now, there is an issue or two a day to deal with. And depending on your political philosophy, you either have the majority of TV networks and print media defending you and one cable news network and the majority of talk radio slamming you, or vice-versa.

Politicians have always had complaints about treatment in the media, even when the media consisted entirely of a weekly newspaper, and that available only in larger cities. And they complained bitterly. Often, their refutations and rebuttals were published, as well. That was how the free press operated. If you owned a newspaper, you were free to publish such rebuttals, or not, but your credibility was at stake. I would call this “free-market journalism”. The success or failure of your paper depended upon the confidence of your readers in your relative “fairness”.

Between World War II, and the turn of the century, there have been a few attempts by administrations to stifle criticism by the press. None were taken kindly by the American people. In fact, the backlash was usually worse than the bad press that inspired it. Since the advent of satellite communications, cable news networks, and the internet, now folks have so much choice in their sources of information, they don’t seem so concerned with sources taking sides. One can get their information from multiple sources  of varying points of view. Most people don’t see that as a bad thing. A bit confusing, perhaps, but in a free society, choice is generally a good thing.

It is also nothing new in politics, particularly in campaigns, to try to “control the message”. But at what point does common “spin” and “controlling the message” become propaganda?

The first definition of “propaganda” I present is from The Collaborative International Dictionary of English v.0.48;

Propaganda Prop`a*gan”da, n. [Abbrev. fr. L. de propaganda
fide: cf. F. propagande. See Propagate.]
[1913 Webster]
1. (R. C. Ch.)
(a) A congregation of cardinals, established in 1622,
charged with the management of missions.
(b) The college of the Propaganda, instituted by Urban
VIII. (1623-1644) to educate priests for missions in
all parts of the world.
[1913 Webster]

2. Hence, any organization or plan for spreading a particular
doctrine or a system of principles.
[1913 Webster]

In the context of the consistency of message among missionaries, that sounds fairly reasonable. Note, however, that this definition is from 1913. Here is a more updated version from the Brittanica Concise Encyclopedia;

Manipulation of information to influence public opinion. The term comes from Congregatio de Propaganda Fide (Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith), a missionary organization established by the pope in 1622. Propagandists emphasize the elements of information that support their position and deemphasize or exclude those that do not. Misleading statements and even lies may be used to create the desired effect in the public audience. Lobbying, advertising, and missionary activity are all forms of propaganda, but the term is most commonly used in the political arena. Prior to the 20th century, pictures and the written media were the principal instruments of propaganda; radio, television, motion pictures, and the Internet later joined their ranks. Authoritarian and totalitarian regimes use propaganda to win and keep the support of the populace. In wartime, propaganda directed by a country at its own civilian population and military forces can boost morale; propaganda aimed at the enemy is an element of psychological warfare.” (Emphasis mine)

Let’s examine what’s going on currently in the political struggle to “control the message”, beginning with the Presidential campaign of 2008.

In a nutshell, the Republican campaign struggled to try to keep up with the Democrats media campaign. With the support of the majority of Hollywood, where fantasies come to life, the Democrats put on a masterful display of a Grand Illusion. The Republicans, lacking an exciting candidate, as well as the theatrical mastery of Hollywood, were at a huge disadvantage. Obama became a messianic figure, with vague promises of “hope and change”, but without much detail. Their timing and organization, thanks to ACORN and SEIU, managed to register hundreds of thousands of new voters (some actually real, live people), and mobilize the guilt-ridden Liberals and African-American voters who desperately wanted to see the first Black President in their lifetime. It didn’t hurt that the overwhelming majority of the media was swooning over the first ever African-American candidate for President. Obama’s campaign took advantage of the situation brilliantly, as any campaign would have hoped to have done.

The Obama campaign also used the new communications technology to spread their message, solicit contributions, and to mobilize his base of voters very effectively, where the McCain camp was not able to. All fair play, so far.

What has happened in the information world since January 21, 2009 is where things start to get dicey.

As the Obama administration came into office with a healthy majority in both houses of Congress, Mr. Obama apparently assumed that he had a mandate from the people for his agenda. Not willing to accept the fact that the 47% of voters voted against him,  he proceeded to try to take advantage of that perceived mandate to push a radical progressive agenda.

What he didn’t count on, was the pushback he would receive from that other 47%. That is totally unacceptable for a messiah with a mandate. Worse yet, he didn’t have a total lock on the news outlets, with that one pesky TV news channel and most of talk radio questioning his appointees, his policies, and his motives. I can just imagine him thinking “I had ’em eating out of my hand, and now these spoilers are exposing things I don’t want exposed, and asking questions I don’t want to have to answer. I had the wool pulled completely over their eyes, and it was clear sailing ahead, but these a*****es are wrecking the illusion we have so carefully built”.

Yep, those damned dissenters. So what do we do about that? We certainly can’t have the opposition going around dispelling our BS figures we feed them in order to keep them from insurrection if they knew the truth. That would also wreck the illusion that I am indeed the messiah, the savior they have been waiting for. We haven’t yet put into place the mechanisms for putting dissenters in FEMA camps. The logical solution is to take “controlling the message” to the next level. Enter Cass Sunstein.

Another radical from Chicago, Sunstein was tapped to be the president’s “Information and Regulatory” chief. Radical from Chicago, you say? I’m sooooo glad you asked.

I see that I am nearing 1200 words, so to keep from losing your interest, I’ll have to continue with a part 2. Sorry, I didn’t intend this, but I’ve learned that I must carefully explain my points, or I’ll be responding to minutia for days, if I don’t. I guess it goes with the territory.

The story of Cass Sunstein, Propaganda Minister of the Obama Regime, coming soon…

Hypocrisy 101

April 23, 2010

They have been frequent and numerous in the past few weeks. They have been repeated ad-nauseum by the so-called mainstream media and administration supporters. They are the largely unsubstantiated accusations that the Tea Party Movement is a racist, hate-filled group that is potentially violent, and probably linked to extremist militia groups and neo-nazis.

Well, let’s look into that a bit, shall we?

I will concede that many people in the Tea Party Movement are angry. They are angry about their representatives in Washington ignoring their concerns and heaping unbelievable debt upon them. They are angry about the unrestrained growth of Federal Government, and it’s insatiable hunger for more power (that is not granted to it in the Constitution). They are angry about the Government gradually eroding their rights and their liberty. That anger is, in my opinion, quite understandable.

Now, let’s look at what is being said, and by whom.

From FoxNews.com: ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis says the times people are living in now will “dwarf” all those stains on America’s history. And she points to the Tea Party movement — or “bowel movement,” in her words — as a harbinger of the persecution to come. “They are coming. And they are coming after you,” the embattled head of ACORN said during a talk last month to the Young Democratic Socialists, the youth branch of the Democratic Socialists, the U.S. branch of the Socialist International. “Any group that says, ‘I’m young, I’m Democratic, and I’m a socialist,’ is all right with me. You know that’s no light thing to do — to actually say, I’m a socialist — because you guys know right now we are living in a time which is going to dwarf the McCarthy era. It is going to dwarf the internment during World War II. We are right now in a time that is going to dwarf the era of Jim Crow and segregation,” Lewis said. Lewis went on to explain that she wasn’t exaggerating — just look at the Tea Parties, she reasoned. “This is not rhetoric or hyperbole — this is real,” Lewis said. “This rise of this Tea Party so-called movement — bowel movement in my estimation — and this blatant uncovering and ripping off the mask of racism.”

Pretty hateful sounding language to me. Absolutely no substantiation. And this is the CEO of Mr. Obama’s favorite “Community Organizing” group. Mr. Obama worked for ACORN before he was a Senator, and had ACORN working for his Senatorial and Presidential campaigns.

From NewsBusters.com: JANEANE GAROFALO: “It’s not about bashing Democrats, it’s not about taxes, they have no idea what the Boston tea party was about, they don’t know their history at all. This is about hating a black man in the White House. This is racism straight up.” “I — you know, because as I’ve said, the Republican hype and the conservative movement has now crystallized into the white power movement.”

Wow, that’s pretty hateful talk too, isn’t it? Again, with no substantiation.
MSNBC’s RACHEL MADDOW commenting on a Tax Day Tea Party:  “Tom Tancredo who started the event off with … a big loud racist bang … So the convention opened with a clarion call to bring back the literacy tests for voting. And as you could hear, the tea party convention crowd erupted in cheers at the suggestion, although, to be fair, it was sort of hard to tell exactly what the sounds coming from the crowd meant. They were sort of a little bit muffled by, you know, the white hoods.”
I’d be willing to bet that there wasn’t one single white hood in the entire crowd.
Now, let’s have a short review of some of the most vitriolic hate towards former President G. W. Bush from the folks who are complaining about “Tea Party hate”.
WARNING: In spite of these sign being displayed by the “politically correct”, and tolerant left, some of these signs are not politically correct, and contain vulgar language! Shocking!
I have collected at least 50 such images, but the point is clear. My apologies for the profanity, but they are not my words, they are the words of the “tolerant”, “politically correct” left. These are the folks who are screaming bloody-murder about the “hateful language” of the Tea Party.
Let’s take a look at a fair sample of the average signs displayed at a Tea Party rally. Granted, there have been a few leftist infiltrators displaying hateful signs at a few Tea Party events for the purpose of discrediting the movement, but this is a fair representation of what you will see at a Tea Party event.
Do these folks look like dangerous radicals to you? I was among these folks at the Richmond, Virginia Lobby Day rally in January 2010. Yes, there were a few folks there that were exercising their right to open-carry firearms in public. Rights are sometimes like muscles, If they are not exercised, they diminish in atrophy. This was a demonstration of our rights in order to keep them from being taken away from us due to lack of use.  There was no profanity spewed by the speakers. There was no hate speech of any kind, period. There was legitimate criticism of government policies, but it was all well within the boundaries of civil disagreement. Nobody was advocating any violence whatsoever. Nobody was slandered. And despite the fact that there were at least 2,000 patriots in attendance, Capitol Square was as clean and litter-free after the rally as it was before.
Now, let’s examine the accusations of violence by the Tea Party.
The fact is that there have been no verified accounts of violence, either verbal or physical by members of the Tea Party. Period.
In fact, many local Tea Party organizations have put out public notices on the subject of violence. The following is a direct quote from the Virginia Tea Party Patriots website:

The Virginia Tea Party does not suggest, condone, promote, incite, overlook or tolerate acts of violence towards any persons or property. The Tea Party movement believes in, and abides by the rule of law as embodied in the Constitution of the United States. It is that very Constitution which provides for the proper and peaceful means for the expression of political opinion and the transition of political power.

The Virginia Tea Party regards any reported incidents of violence or destruction of property very seriously. The Virginia Tea Party however does not engage in unproductive speculation or rush to judgment. The Virginia Tea Party relies on the results of an official investigation by authorities before issuing a specific statement relative to any reported incident.

In the meantime, we strongly encourage all individuals concerned about any reported incidents to rely solely on reliable factual information before forming an opinion. To do otherwise, we believe, would not serve to foster an atmosphere of civil discourse and responsible actions beneficial to all.

The Virginia State Police has concluded the rubber gas line on the barbecue grill of Congressman Tom Perriello’s brother, was not cut as originally reported by the media, but had been chewed by a squirrel. The media conveniently did not report this update, as it did not fit into their demonization of the Tea Party Movement.

There are, however, several documented acts of violence perpetrated by supporters of the Obama administration against Tea Party Patriots. Of course, Attorney General Eric Holder, has not seen fit to investigate or prosecute these blatant cases of violations of the Civil Rights of Patriots, under the Constitution. Here are a few examples:

Is it my imagination, or is this the height of hypocrisy? It certainly makes me take anything the so-called Mainstream Media says with a large grain of salt. As far as the current regime goes, I don’t believe a word they say. They have lost all credibility they may once have had.

Don’t take my word for it folks. Do your homework. Become informed. ABC, NBC, CBS, and CNN will not tell you anything that is detrimental to the current regime. It is in their interest to support the Obama regime. You only have a hope of getting the truth from Fox News Network and independent online news outlets. The truth is indeed out there, but now you must wade through all the spin to find it. I will be providing links to independent news outlets soon.

Hang in there, Patriots. We WILL get through these times…

Patriots Unite!

April 22, 2010

Please bear with me, as this is my first attempt at blogging. I’m sure it will get better with time and experience.

The reason for starting this blog is to offer information and means for networking among the millions of American Patriots who are concerned with the direction our beloved country has taken recently.

It is my belief that if we are to preserve our liberty, that we must unite to return our government to it’s original purpose as defined in the Constitution.  This will be no easy task, as our government has grown so bloated and assumed so much power that was never intended by our Founding Fathers. Those in government who are drunk on their assumed power will not give it up easily.

I am NOT advocating violence, nor the overthrow of the government! If we mobilize and act quickly, we can return our government to what it was meant to be by peaceful political means. That means educating yourself about history and politics. It means that once you educate yourself, you educate your friends and neighbors, and convince them that they must become politically active in order to preserve the Liberty that they are accustomed to. We must take this country back before it is “fundamentally transformed” into a European-style Social Democracy. Wishing it will not make it so. Obama and the Progressives are moving as quickly as they can, expecting us to not pay attention and let them slip one thing after another past us. They are charged-up after ramming their unconstitutional health-care take-over through, over the objections of the clear majority of Americans.

It is obvious that the Progressives are hell-bent on “transforming” America into their Euro-Socialist dream, using the justification of “Social Justice” to play Robin Hood and re-distribute the assets of our country. Folks, if you think Political Correctness was bad, you’d better buckle your seatbelt. What the Progressives want to do will shock you, when you check into it. And that is precisely what I am challenging you to do. Check into it. It is my job to wake you up, not to “brainwash” you.

If you are reading this, then you most likely have internet access. I will be providing links to news sources very shortly. Don’t be content with 30 minutes of network news every day. They are by far “in the tank” for the Progressive agenda. They will tell you how great Obama’s policies and objectives are, and hide the details of his agenda that take away your liberties and expand the power of the government to dictate the details of your daily life to you. You must spend some time to read between the lines. Become informed. Check out the voting records of your representatives in Washington. Contact them regularly, letting them know of your concerns. Don’t let the fact that many of them are not listening deter you! Get it on record!

Become involved in local and state politics. Take the time to go to city and county party meetings, and cast your vote. If you don’t, nothing will change. You have a right, and a responsibility to voice your opinion as to how you wish to be represented. Recently, because of the mobilization and action of the local Tea Party members, two counties in Virginia had their GOP County Chairmen overthrown within one week. WE SURROUND THEM, folks! It is possible. Grassroots is, by definition, from the ground up. Start there, but keep the pressure on the D.C. bunch too.

Make no mistake, they are feeling the heat. At first, the Tea Party movement was dismissed as a fringe group. It didn’t go away. Now, the movement has grown and gained such momentum that the Progressives feel the need to demonize and smear us with false accusations of racism and violence. It is, in fact, the leftists who have perpetrated violence, not the Tea Party. They see the snowball rolling down the hill, picking up size and speed, and they are terrified. We cannot become complacent, we must persevere.

We must exercise our rights, and vote these career politicians out of office. We must send a clear signal to Washington that we DEMAND honest and fair representation. We DEMAND that our representatives adhere to the Constitution. We DEMAND that our representatives be good stewards of our tax money, and our resources. We must show them that if they don’t, we will replace them with someone who will. That is our right. That is our responsibility.
